River
When the rains starts falling
and the snow melts away,
the winter is over
and the river awakes
And the trees stand
knee deep in the flow.
While the rust colored leaves
once covered by snow, show.
And the leftover cornstalks,
survivors of winter,
strike poses in the meadow,
while at their feet the frosty ground
melts to a muddy brown
and the river flows.
And the winter was so frozen
and quiet.
Crystalline silence glistening white
Cold while light from distant sun
barely warms the afternoon.
As the Earth leans closer
to the Sun she remembers
how to shed warmth with her light
Solid melts to liquid
frozen ice to flowing water.
The thundering river
tumbling down the mountain
with the strength and the power
of a leviathan
Pure white snow
melts to chocolate water.
She takes all the order she used to know
and washes it away.
She has a twig from the branch
that broke her fall from the sky.
She has the soil from the hilltop
where she was frozen as ice.
She has an acorn from the squirrel
who buried it too deep in the snow.
She carries these memories
wherever she goes.
She hollows the gorges
with the winters melting
and swallows them up again
the very next spring.
Falling from the mountain
to the river to the lake
to the ocean,
her spirit rises into the air
and falls once again.

Orchard
There are days when the clouds all come alive
Rolling and stretching and tumbling by
Their bellies are gray, but their backs are white
and they wage fearsome war with the sunlight
At night the autumn paints the leaves colors
Morning sun sets these trees on fire
And they burn and they blaze with a yellow flame
and the wind returns them from where they came
And they burn and they blaze and they scorch the hillside
There are days when the leaves all ride the wind
a spirit asleep they rise again
They go around and around again
The clouds cast their shadow on the land below
Darkness grips as if it won't let go
As the sun expands from a single ray
like a breath of light as it floods the day

Lighthouse
The waves will crash, the sea will roar...
That is the way of the ocean.
The sun will set, the wind will blow
That is the way of the sky.
Shine on ye lighthouse.
Guide us to the shore with your light.
In the middle of the bay stands a lighthouse
a tower of white on an island of stone.
Alone in the ocean's vastness,
as single keeper lives there all alone.
The waves will crash, the sea will roar...
That is the way of the ocean.
The sun will set, the wind will blow
That is the way of the sky.
Shine on ye lighthouse.
Guide us to the shore with your light.
Not many knew him, few knew him well
few knew his face, but many his light.
Few shook his hand, but so many fell
into the sweeping arm of his light.
The waves will crash, the sea will roar...
That is the way of the ocean.
The sun will set, the wind will blow
That is the way of the sky.
Shine on ye lighthouse.
Guide us to the shore with your light.
Many storms come to New England
at least one or two a year,
but the people depend on the ocean,
and the ships must be guided to shore...
Then one night I heard the clanging shutters,
and I heard the frightening growl of the storm.
The wind was screaming "danger".
When I awoke, the light was no more...
We never found the keeper after the storm.
We never did find him, the man so brave
whose light kept so many from harm.
He was the one we could not save.
The waves will crash, the sea will roar...
That is the way of the ocean.
The sun will set, the wind will blow
That is the way of the sky.
Shine on ye lighthouse.
Guide us to the shore with your light.

Follow
I am the one who will watch over you,
today, tomorrow
I will be there to watch you grow.
They learn to read
They learn to write
They learn to argue, learn to fight.
She stands between them when they fight
She tries to make them compromise.
I am the one to follow
I am the one who will watch over you,
today, tomorrow
I will be there to watch you grow.
The children learn
the teacher watches them grow
The children leave
the teacher watches them go
Lessons to plan, projects to do
and yet there is so much more to
what she is doing every day.
She sees the child
behind the grade.
Although he's mean
although he's wild,
it breaks my heart to fail this child.
His parents are so rarely home.
It's almost like he lives alone.
But there are times when I see
their budding curiosity.
Their minds at work,
their eyes alight
It is a wonderful sight
I am the one to follow
I am the one who will watch over you,
today, tomorrow
I will be there to watch you grow.
The next time you're back
in your town
why don't you think
of stopping down?
Because I'm curious to see
the person you
have grown to be.
I am the one to follow
I am the one who will watch over you,
today, tomorrow
I will be there to watch you grow.

Clearwater
When we raise the white sail in the autumn air
everyone will know what it means.
And the Clearwater goes where the Hudson flows,
by the Catskills down to the sea.
And the wind and the tide will be our guide
And the wind and the tide will be.
From the sea to the sky,
from the clouds to the rain,
every drop of water will fall again.
And the Clearwater goes where the Hudson flows,
by the Catskills down to the sea.
And the wind and the tide will be our guide
And the wind and the tide will be.
Some may search deep below for trunks of gold,
but the sunlight on the water is treasure to me.
And the Clearwater goes where the Hudson flows,
by the Catskills down to the sea.
And the wind and the tide will be our guide
And the wind and the tide will be.

And You
And you catch my eye, and you sing my name.
You understand even when I can't explain.
And your eyes are open and your arms are wide
You see my point, catch my drift, see my side.
I was alone, and you took me in.
I was afraid, and you, and you.
And you are now, and you will be,
you know how, and you show me.
And your eyes are open. Your arms are wide.
you see my point, catch my drift, see my side.
I was alone, and you took me in.
I was afraid, and you, and you.
From cinderblock to cellophane,
solid wall to windowpane,
hopeless sea to welcome shore,
obstacle to open door.
And you are now, and you will be,
You know how and you show me.
You've seen it all. You know my faults.
You know me well and you love me still.
I was alone, and you took me in.
I was afraid, and you, and you.
